Cops in Warangal await arrival of challan books

WARANGAL: Traffic violators are having a field day since past few days in Warangal commissionerate  jurisdiction as the traffic cops have stopped fining as stock of traffic challan books has exhausted.
According to ACP Janardha, traffic police are supplied challan books by DGP office situated in Hyderabad every month but due to some problem in the government press, the printing of challan books have stopped since a month. “We have been told that there is no stock of challan books at DGP office. We are waiting for the new stock to arrive,” he said.

As the Warangal commissionerate does not have online challan payment facility, it has become difficult for traffic personnel to fine traffic violators. It is learnt that on an average, a traffic SI uses one challan book for three days. Apart from disciplining traffic violators, traffic challans are a big source of revenue for police department. Sources say that the department earns a revenue of over `1 crore every month through traffic challans. “We are losing revenue. We are helpless,” traffic SI he said.

Meanwhile, despite non-availability of traffic challan books, cops are trying to discipline violators by issuing warning and noting down their vehicle numbers. Some traffic police personnel were seen booking traffic violators under City Police Act rather than Traffic Violation Act in the absence of challan books.
It is learnt that the city police senior officials have brought the issue to government’s notice.
