HYDERABAD: IAS officer Dharavath Venkateswara Rao, joint director in the agriculture department, along with his son D Venkata Sukruth were arrested on Tuesday by the Jubilee Hills police in connection with the murder of their driver.

Speaking to media here on Tuesday, west zone DCP A Venkateshwar Rao said Venkata Sukruth (19) and his mother’s driver Nagaraju (26) went to Sai Kalyan Residency apartments in Yousufguda on March 17 night. After consuming liquor, Nagaraju tried to sodomise Sukruth resulting in a scuffle between them.

The latter then hit Nagaraju with a brick on his head following which he collapsed and fell unconscious, the DCP said. Sukruth left the place, went home and  returned to the apartment two hours later to check if Nagaraju was alive. After finding him dead, Sukruth called his father  and narrated the incident. Rao suggested Sukruth dispose of the body, police said.

“On March 18 night, Sukruth, along with his father and younger brother, went to the apartment. Sukruth went upstairs posing as a worker and wrapped Nagaraju’s body in a bed sheet to bring it down.

However, the youth failed in his attempt to bring down the body from the terrace and had to flee when questioned by one of the residents,” the DCP said, adding that a street vendor saw the trio escaping from the scene.

The body was found on March 19 in a decomposed state after the residents of the apartments grew suspicious about foul smell and alerted the police.

In order to make up a story, Rao lodged a complaint with the Jubilee Hills police on Sunday stating that his driver was missing.  He concealed the facts and tried to dispose of the body, for which he was booked under Section 201 of IPC and also under Section 212 of IPC for harbouring the offender, the DCP said.
“During questioning, the IAS officer complained of dizziness and was treated at a hospital. He is now doing well and will be produced in the court along with his son.

Further investigation is on to find out whether the sodomy allegation was a fact by sending the accused for a medical test,” the DCP said.
