Second infectious disease hospital in Telangana mooted

A suggestion to have another Infectious Disease Hospital in Telangana was floated during a workshop held recently in Hyderabad.

HYDERABAD: A suggestion to have another Infectious Disease Hospital in Telangana was floated during a workshop held recently in Hyderabad.

As of now, people from under-privileged backgrounds suffering from infectious diseases such as measles, chikungunya, chickenpox, dengue and others, have to come to Fever Hospital in Nallakunta, Hyderabad to seek treatment.  For those who live in tribal areas in the rural hinterland, it is a long journey to Fever Hospital. Moreover, delay in treatment makes it worse.

A workshop was held early this week to strengthen surveillance of Infectious Diseases Hospitals which was attended by officials from Telangana Health department (THD), National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP).

“A suggestion was made to establish another Infectious Disease Hospital. If it is established in Kothagudem or Khammam, people living in tribal areas will find it easy to get admitted there.  This way, there will be no delay in treating patients,” said Dr G Subbalaxmi, Telangana’s joint director (Epidemics).  An estimated 50 per-cent of those suffering from such diseases in the State get admitted at Fever hospital.

Though the doctors at Fever Hospital said that there is no overload of patients there. The proposed hospital will make it easy for those from tribal areas to easily access a hospital where infectious diseases are treated. Diphtheria, Mumps, Meningitis, Chikungunya, Measles and other infectious diseases would be treated at the hospital.
