Will Rahul Gandhi's Sangareddy public meet revive party’s fortunes in Telangana?

The party certainly hopes so, recalling Indira Gandhi’s speech at the same venue in 1979.

HYDERABAD: The grand old party Congress, which was unable to derive political mileage from its decision to accord statehood to Telangana during the 2014 polls, is of the view that its proposed public meeting in Sangareddy to be addressed by Rahul Gandhi on June 1 will bring good luck to the party.

The party leaders recall that Indira Gandhi had addressed a public meeting from the same venue in December 1979. Later, she contested from Medak seat and got elected to 7th Lok Sabha in 1980. Interestingly, the same location in Sangareddy from where Indira Gandhi addressed her election meeting, has been selected for ‘Telangana Praja Garjana’ to be held on June 1.

“Lot of sentiments are attached with the venue. It proved to be the launchpad for the revival of Congress across the country in 1980 General election. We are confident that Rahul’s speech at Sanga Reddy will be historic and bring good fortunes for the state Congress,” TPCC chief N Uttam Kumar Reddy said.

“Indira Gandhi picked Medak as her second Constituency to contest the election. Although she registered a landslide victory from Rae Bareli too, she had retained the Medak seat. She served as country’s Prime Minister as Medak MP and remained so till she was assassinated in 1984,” Reddy recalled, while interacting with scribes here on Saturday. According to the TPCC chief, the venue was finalised as it had strong sentimental value for the party.

“The present venue emotionally links each and every Congress worker with the party. Indira Gandhi Ji’s association with Medak was very strong and she had maintained it till her last breath. Similarly, AICC President Sonia Gandhi turned the 60-year-old dream into a reality by granting statehood to Telangana,” Uttam said.

The TPCC chief remarked that Rahul Gandhi had been continuing the legacy of Nehru-Gandhi family by maintaining same bond with Telangana people.

“Besides exposing the failures of BJP government at the Centre and TRS government in the state, Rahul will also unveil the roadmap for Telangana Congress for next elections, during the meeting,” he said. The TPCC chief further added that Rahul Gandhi would release a charge sheet against the failures of the state government on the occasion.
