HYDERABAD:While phobia over the attitude of Donald Trump administration to immigration and H-1B Visa grips India, R Chandrashekar, president of the National Association of Software and Services Companies, has said that such moves by governments will prove ‘futile’ as the power of technology has ‘outstripped’ the power of individual governments, even the most powerful one.

He was speaking at a session on  ‘Digital Globalisation: What lies ahead’ here on Wednesday.
The NASSCOM chief said, “Forces of de-globalisation are being driven by politics, which is local, whether at a national or sub-national level and this politics is, in turn, being driven by fears, real or imaginary, about an uncertain future.” Chandrashekar said that while the necessity of cross-border movement of employees was going down due to the advances in technology, governments and their politics, which are always local in nature, can just control laws that govern business but not technology.
In regard to the growing demand in the US for training local people in job skills that are outsourced to countries like India so that the outsourcing can be stopped, Chandrashekar said that while every country trained its people in job skills, no country would ever have enough manpower within its geographical boundaries with all the required job skills.

When asked by Express about the likely impact of the policies restricting cross-border data flow like the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR), data privacy policy being planned in India and the rise of political parties with nationalist ideologies on technology business that is based on data, Chandrashekar said, “GDPR is one of the first instances of efforts to limit the movement of data based on privacy concerns. However, this may not necessarily lead to the required results.”

Meanwhile, a technology partnership Memorandum of Understanding was exchanged between officials of the Telangana government and Taoyuan, a city in Taiwan during the closing ceremony of the three-day World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) and NASSCOM Indian Leadership Forum (NASSCOM ILF) here on Wednesday.
