Pharmacies in Mahbubnagar district of Telangana flouting rules

MAHBUBNAGAR: Pharmacies in Mahbubnagar district are flouting drug control rules by employing persons who do not have the required educational qualifications to run a pharmacy. This is leading to several problems as the unqualified employees of the pharmacies are committing mistakes in identifying the medicines prescribed by the doctors and handing over wrong medicines to the patients.

The persons at these pharmacies who read the prescriptions and give medicines to buyers should have a Diploma of Pharmacy or a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. But it has come to light now that most of the owners of the pharmacies are borrowing the certificates of qualified pharmacists and operating their stores in clear violation of the rules.

The lenders of the certificates are being paid a monthly sum by the pharmacies’ operators. Not only this, they are employing persons who have completed only class 10 or 12.

In some cases, patients have fallen ill after taking the wrong medicine given by the ‘pharmacist’. To add to this, the victims of wrong medicines are also not aware where they can lodge complaints. The rules of the department also make it mandatory for all the pharmacies to display the names of the drug inspectors at a visible place in their shops in a prominent manner.

However, none of the pharmacies in the district is following this rule. Most of the pharmacies are also not set up as per the physical provisions of the department. As against the minimum space requirement of 10x12 feet room, the pharmacies in the district are found to be smaller in size.
