HYDERABAD: The old and rickety fleet of vehicles used by 73 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) for lifting garbage in the city will be replaced with electric auto vehicles. This was being proposed to improve the livability of citizens.

Keeping the Swachh Telangana vision in mind, Director of Municipal Administration of Telangana state have decided to procure electric autos, (battery operated) for the lifting of garbage in each of the 73 ULBs across the state except GHMC. This initiative is also intended to provide the comprehensive reduction on Green House Gas emissions, thereby providing pollution free neighbourhood for the people in the cities and towns. The idea is to make the ULBs free from pollution and save energy and emphasis was being laid on curbing pollution in towns and cities.

The advantage of using electric autos will allow electric garbage truck to operate without polluting in open space but especially inside closed areas. There is no Carbon dioxide emission and this allows the transport of waste even inside shopping centres and other places. The electric garbage auto does not make any noise and can operate in and around structures where silence is an important requisite, such as hospitals, residential areas, shopping centres.

In this connection, a few days ago, the DMA had invited expression of interest for procurement of battery powered load carriage vehicle for garbage collection for each of the 73 ULBs in the state. The electric garbage truck have to be specifically designed to be energy efficient, DMA officials said. The agencies should set up charging facility at each ULB, as per the requirement of the ULBs and based on the population, firms should deliver the required vehicles at the respective ULBs.
