Good news for farmers as Telangana to get Krishna water in three days

Karnataka officials lift six gates of Almatti and water has been released from Narayanapur.

HYDERABAD: Here is the good news for the farmers of Krishna basin. The State is all set to receive Krishna waters in the next three days. The Karnataka officials lifted six gates of Almatti on Tuesday and water was also released from Narayanapur.

“With heavy inflows, the Karnataka officials released 35,000 cusecs of water from Narayanapur on Tuesday. Once the water is released from Narayanapur, it will take three days to reach Jurala,” Jurala executive engineer N Sridhar told Express.

The Almatti reservoir has no canal system and the entire water will be released to Narayanapur project. Karnataka has canal system under Narayanapur project. However, the carrying capacity of the canals under Narayanapur is just 12,000 cusecs and the inflows are close to one lakh cusecs. With this, Karnataka has no other option but to release the water to Jurala.

As many as six gates of Almatti reservoir were opened up to a level of one metre on Tuesday and the outflows to Narayanapur project are recorded as 1.22 lakh cusecs. The outflows from Narayanapur on Tuesday night was 35,000 cusecs.

On Monday, 25,000 cusecs of water was released from Almatti through power generation. With the inflows increasing from 1.28 lakh cusecs on Monday to 1.55 lakh cusecs on Tuesday, officials from Karnataka, also lifted the gates of Almatti to release more water to downstream. As against the live storage at full reservoir level (FRL) of 37.64 tmcft, the present level at Narayanapur was 30.93 tmcft.

The Almatti water released will first reach to Narayanapur. If it overflows at Narayanapur, the water will be released to Jurala project and from there to Srisailam project. If the current inflows into Almatti and Narayanapur continued for a couple of days, Srisaialm Dam will also start receiving water.
