HYDERABAD: The State government has sought national status for the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation scheme and more funds for its early completion. The request was made by Irrigation minister T Harish Rao when he called on Union water resources minister Nitin Gadkari in Delhi on Tuesday.

It may be recalled that the State government had earlier sought `20,000-crore special Central fund for KLIS whose estimated cost is `85,000 crore.

Speaking to reporters after meeting Gadkari, Rao said, “I thanked the Union minister for according all the permissions for KLIS. Because of the timely clearances, KLIS works are going on at a rapid pace.” He invited Gadkari to visit the project soon.

Industries and IT minister KT Rama Rao too was in Delhi on Tuesday. He called on Union textiles minister Smriti Irani and requested her to sanction 18 block-level handloom clusters for backward districts of the state. “Smriti Irani responded positively to our demands,” KTR told reporters later in Delhi.
