HYDERABAD: The State government has decided to examine whether Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) and Telangana State Mineral Development Corporation Limited (TSMDC) can come forward to jointly set up the proposed Integrated Steel Plant at Bayyaram in Khammam.

As per the decision taken by the Industries Minister KT Rama Rao, a committee was constituted by Industries principal secretary Jayesh Ranjan on Monday to explore the possibilities of setting up the steel plant in Bayyaram.“Khammam is extremely well suited for an integrated steel plant. The best grade of iron ore is located in close proximity in Chhattisgarh. Low-grade Iron Ore available within the State can also be utilised for steel manufacturing through beneficiation. Coal deposits are available in plenty under SCCL and required coking-grade coal can also be imported from the nearest port,” Jayesh Ranjan said in his orders. Besides, he said, sufficient government land, water, power, trained and motivated workforce are also available for the integrated steel plant.

“SCCL and TSMDC are two Corporations that have a very impressive track record in mining based activities. Both the Corporations are considered among the best performers in the country. The TS government wishes to examine if SCCL and TSMDC can come forward to jointly establish an integrated Steel Plant in Khammam,” Jayesh Ranjan said.

The State government constituted the committee to go into the details of this possibility. The chairman of the committee will be  Special Chief Secretary, Energy Department. Industries Principal Secretary will be the convener. CMD of SCCL VC and MD of TSMDC and Director of Mines and Geology will be the members. The Committee should invite officials and experts from NMDC, MECON and Rail Vikas Nigam ltd during deliberations, the orders said. It will submit the report within a month.
