HYDERABAD: A division bench of the Hyderabad High Court on Tuesday pulled up the Centre and the Telangana government for their failure in extending assistance to Kanagala Sriramulu, a 37-year-old former commando of National Security Guard (NSG), who was crippled badly in the terror attack on the Pathankot air force base in Punjab last year.

“Is this the way you give respect to the brave soldiers who put their lives for the country? The leaders make huge promises while paying respects to those who lost their lives while on duty, but later nobody bothers about them and their families. It appears that the governments do not bother as they carry national flag but not political parties flags”, the bench remarked.

The bench was dealing with a PIL case which was taken up suo moto based on a news item published in The New Indian Express on August 29 wherein it was reported that Sriramulu was unable to walk and talk freely after the Pathankot incident. Further, he went into coma for a few days and when he came out of it, his right hand, right leg and right eye were all non-functioning.  Sriramulu was an expert in defusing grenades.

The bench made it clear that Sriramulu be given Rs1.5 crore financial assistance and 10 cents land in a proper locality. If the TS government does not take steps in this regard, the Court would pass necessary orders on the issue, the bench noted and adjourned case hearing by a week.
