Panic Button in Kerala Buses Ends Travelmares for Women

Kerala Motor Vehicles Department is mulling installation of global positioning system and CCTV cameras in 16,000-odd buses.

Giving teeth to women’s safety in stage carriers, the Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) is mulling installation of global positioning system (GPS) and CCTV cameras in 16,000-odd buses plying in the state. The latest addition to the gamut of smart safety features is a ‘Panic Button’.Joint Transport Commissioner, Enforcement, Rajeev Puthalath, said that “the MVD is planning to push for the installation of ‘panic buttons’ in 16,000-odd stage carriers in the state. Once it is pressed by women in distress, an alert signal will be given to the centralised MVD control room and also to the respective RTO office and police stations. The button, combined with the GPS facility, will en-sure a safe journey for the women passengers. The facilities are slated to be launched between April-May.”
