NEW DELHI: The ‘paradise on earth’ has turned into the paradise of properties for a handful of separatist leaders—the so-called torchbearers of azadi. The ongoing investigation into the terror funding in Jammu & Kashmir by the National Investigating Agency (NIA) has revealed that these separatists amassed wealth worth crores of rupees. And their riches were overflowing when the Valley burned of violence.

A dossier prepared by the NIA on terror funding in the state has a list of about 20 top separatist leaders who own nearly 200 properties across the country. They are: Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Altaf Ahmed Shah, Naseem Geelani, Nayeem Geelani, Farooq Ahmad Dar, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Zahoor Watali, Ghuma, Nabi Sumji, Asadullah Allahi, Yasin Malik, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Abdul Rasheed, Aga Saveed Hassan, Mehraj-ud-din, Mohd Yousef Lone, Mohd Mir, Bashir Ahmed Bhat, Asiya Andrabi and Nayeem Mohammed Khan and Farooq Ahmed Bagoo.

Kashmiri separatist leaders

The investigation has established direct link between Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Hurriyat leaders. Financial assistance from across the border has been used for over two decades to fuel fire in the Valley, the dossier reveals.

The agency had arrested seven separatist leaders—hardliner Hurriyat chief SAS Geelani’s son-in-law Altaf Ahmed Shah, Ayaz Akbar, Peer Saifullah, Mehraj Kalwal, Shahid-ul-Islam, Nayeem Khan and Farooq Ahmed Dar—last month, and big-time hawala operator Watali was held early this week.
Last year, there were nearly 1,600 incidents of stone-pelting in parts of the Kashmir valley and around 80 civilians were killed during the protests.

J&K has a per capita income of Rs 1.16 lakh against the nation’s Rs 93,293. The state contributes about Rs 1. 51 lakh crore to Indian economy and ranks 21st among the states in GDP.
