Watching lax watchmen: Delhi Police beefs up armoury security

NEW DELHI: The well-armed Delhi Police is not being able to take care of its weapons. Senior officers who conducted surprise checks on armouries in police stations last month found that weapon management was not in a safe and uniformed manner, “resulting in the possibility of damage, theft and misuse”.

On the basis of the survey-cum-inspection report, Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik has told the force to purchase anti-theft racks for its weapons immediately.

“There will be three categories of anti-theft racks; one for SLRs and INSAS rifles, another for sophisticated weapons like MP-5, SAF, AK-47, etc, and third for small arms such as pistols and revolvers. These racks will have a dual lock system,” a Delhi Police official said. “Officers involved in survey said weapons can be stolen very easily and it is also dangerous in case of any attack.”

The Intelligence Bureau had issued an alert about attacks and weapons’ robberies on police stations following an offensive on a police station in Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir in August. The terrorists killed five policemen and tooks away weapons.

In October, a pistol with five bullets was stolen from Bindapur Police Station in South West Delhi. The case is still under investigation.
