NEW DELHI: Paying no heed to the safety of commuters, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is busy expanding its pilot project to paint more 3D zebra crossings across the city.

Commuters have been raising concerns over the design of the crossings that seem like an optical illusion.

Following the Gujarat model, the NDMC had painted one such crossing on Rajaji Marg last year, which has been washed away with rain, and two on Safdarjung Marg and near Vigyan Bhawan on Rafi Marg this year.

“When you are driving, from a distance, it seems that real blocks have been placed on the road. A person driving in speed may be caught by a surprise and put instant brakes, leading to a collision or mishap,” said Jatin Upadhyaya, a commuter.

No survey has been done from the safety point of view, so far NDMC superintendent engineer told The Sunday Standard. But it is the responsibility of traffic department to do the safety audits, he added.

The NDMC has planned to paint 21 more crossings in the city.

When contacted, Ajay Kashyap, special commissioner traffic, Central Delhi, said, “Neither we have received any complaint from commuters regarding these crossings, nor has any accident occurred due to them. We are monitoring the crossings and if we get any complaint, the civic body will be informed.”
