Delhi: 5,796 schools to be emergency ready

NEW DELHI: For the first time, any state or UT in India is going to equip its schools for disaster management.

To prepare schools for ensuring their safety in case of a disaster, the Delhi Disaster management Authority (DDMA) has launched the School Safety Project in 5,796 government and private schools —comprising 44 lakh students and 1.4 lakh teachers—in 11 districts of Delhi.

On the lines of National Disaster Management Authority’s programme, the Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced to launch a similar programme in the remaining nine districts.

“Under the programme, disaster officials will conduct mock drills and awareness seminars at schools,” DDMA special secretary J P Aggarwal told The Sunday Standard.

The DDMA has also directed all schools to form a School Disaster Management Committee comprising school principal, vice-principal and senior teachers to conduct these programmes.
