NEW DELHI: Comics are entertaining and engaging. So cashing in on this, the Ministry of Law and Justice along with Ministry of Human Resource Development has come out with illustration-based short story booklets to spread awareness about legal issues.

Topics ranging from dowry prohibition laws, domestic violence law, free legal aid services, forest rights and other legal rights have been picked up.

A similar initiative was taken by the National Legal Services Authority last year when it roped in actors for making documentaries showing success stories where people were helped through legal services.

It was a great success and it inspired the law ministry to adopt the comic books idea.

“The idea is to educate people about their legal rights in day-to-day life. It is a common practice that we tend to forgot our rights and face harassment,” said a law ministry official.

The booklets will be distributed at legal literacy camps, organised by Legal Services Committee at state and village level.

“These booklets are not only printed in Hindi but also in English and other regional/vernacular languages (especially in states where pendency of petty cases are on the rise). It would reduce time, money and energy of both parties involved in the dispute,” an official said.
