AAP defumigates MCD projects

In the ongoing viral season, checking mosquito breeding in Delhi is crawling as the state government is yet to notify the formation of zonal committees in the corporations

NEW DELHI: Even after two months of the BJP coming to power in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), its functioning remains hampered, thanks to non-cooperation of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government headed by Arvind Kejriwal.

In the ongoing viral season, fumigation and checking mosquito breeding in Delhi—apart from other projects—is crawling as the AAP government is yet to notify the formation of zonal committees in the MCDs. Preety Agarwal, mayor of North Corporation Delhi met Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal seeking his intervention in the slow pace of work.

Before the 2016 MCD elections, the Delhi Election Commission changed the boundaries of 104 wards, due to which zones have to be restructured. The restructuring has not happened yet, which is the responsibility of the Delhi government to float a notification for formation
of zonal committees.

The notification is important as many some Assembly constituencies are divided into two zones, making providing basic amenities complicated as they fall under two separate MCDs.
“In the absence of the notification, which authenticates zone-wise details of wards in zones, North DMC is not in a position to proceed further. For smooth functioning of the civic body it is essential to have the statutory committees in place. The proposed notification is of utmost importance which needs immediate intervention,” Aggarwal wrote to Baijal.

Officials said that new projects—such as procurement of uniforms in municipal schools for students, medicines for fumigation, etc—will not be proposed in the absence of a standing committee of the House.
