NEW DELHI: After three years of extensive planning for cleaning the Ganga, budget allocation of `20,000 crore and implementation of work monitored by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Central government is now hiring a private agency to review the progress and carry  out a social and environment assessment of Ganga Basin.

The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), the nodal agency for Ganga cleaning, will ask the consultancy to undertake a multi-disciplinary ‘Strategic Environmental, Economic and Social Assessment’ through a systematic compilation on environment, social and economic parameters for the entire Ganga Basin.

Cleaning the river, considered holy by majority of Indians, is a flagship programme of the NDA government,
but in the last three years very little work has been done.
