BENGALURU: The Muzrai Department in Karnataka will soon put up details, including darshan timings of all its temples under it, in an app and website. Two private firms—Spiritual Products Pvt Ltd, Mysuru, and Sri Ramanujan Info Solutions and Service Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad—will develop the app and website for temples in 15 districts each. The firms are doing this free of cost.

The project was handed over to the firms with a condition that the information on temples shall not be used for advertisements or for any other commercial benefit.

An official from the Hindu Religious Institution and Charitable Endowment Department said there was no information pertaining to all temples in the state for the general public. To facilitate this, proposals were invited from IT firms to develop an app and website, the official said.

He says there is a footfall of two-crore devotees in temples every year, resulting in revenue generation of Rs 500-600 crore to the state in the form of money collected for sevas, entry fee and from hundis. To start with, the details of 800-1,000 temples of Group-A and B (see box) will be provided in the app.

Temples like Sri Chamundeshwari in Mysuru and Male Mahadeshwara Swamy Temple in Chamarajanagar attract more devotees from neighbouring states such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Many people from Kerala visit temples in Dakshina Kannada district. Temples in North Karnataka also attract many devotees. But there are no complete details online for all these temples, the official added.
