Nek Chand’s Rock Garden blooms in Belgrade

CHANDIGARH: Figures and statues standing in silent solitude in the famous Rock Garden here bear testimony to their creator Nek Chand’s sleight of hand with waste.

On October 5, a mini replica of this stunning work of art was inaugurated in the Serbian capital Belgrade.

Set up in the Museum of Naive and Marginal Art, the ‘rock garden’ has more than two dozen sculptures. These sculptures were sent to Venice from Chandigarh in 2015 for a six-month exhibition.

After the exhibition ended, Nek Chand’s son Anuj Saini transported took them to Belgrade, where they have a permanent place as a Mini Rock Garden.

“The transportation cost of these artefacts from Venice to Belgrade was borne by the Serbian authorities,’’ says Anuj. “A documentary on my late father was shown at the inauguration ceremony.”

An artist exchange programme between Naive and Marginal Art Museum and Rock Garden Society will start in December.
