Don’t mess with Jessica Bamon, she can pack a power punch

Meet Jessica Bamon, Northeast’s first lady bouncer, who protects women and ensures order and decorum at a nightclub in the picturesque Meghalaya capital.

SHILLONG (MEGHALAYA): If boxer Mary Kom pulls one hell of a punch and wins a medal, so does this woman without flexing her muscles. Meet Jessica Bamon, Northeast’s first lady bouncer, who protects women and ensures order and decorum at a nightclub in the picturesque Meghalaya capital.

With a strongly physique and envious fitness thanks to her rigorous training sessions at the gym, the 30-year-old, who is a winner of several awards in bodybuilding and fitness competitions, has been instrumental in creating a craze among youngsters, especially girls, to work on fitness for a healthy living.

“I have been an athlete who envisaged a life in sports. As a young girl, I played cricket, football, basketball and what not near at Malki in this city. My dream was to represent my state. But as time rolled by, I started developing a penchant for the job of a police officer. I wanted to be self-reliant,” she says.

After graduating from college in 2012, Jessica joined the Bouncers’ Gym to be fit for the police job. “Later, I switched to the Power Flex Gym. The same year, Junestar Kharbuli, president of Bouncers’ Association of Meghalaya, gave me a job as a bouncer at the Knight Inn,” says Jessica.

In June last year, Baniki Papang, the security coordinator of Centre Point Group of Enterprise, egged her on to join the nightclub Cloud 9. “I was impressed with her fitness and smartness and wanted her to join Cloud 9 as lady bouncers are rare,” says Papang.

At Cloud 9, owned by Larsing Ming Sawyan, who also owns Lajong Football Club, Jessica’s job is to restore order whenever there is a situation involving women, and protect them. That apart, she has to frisk every woman visiting the club, famous for its discotheque.

Born to parents with Chinese, Assamese and Jaintia (Meghalaya tribe) roots, Jessica wants to start a fitness training centre in Shillong. “I’ll be happy if more Meghalaya women start craving for fitness. I have no regrets that I couldn’t chase my dream.

By doing what I am doing now, I feel happy and honoured,” says the bouncer who also has a post-graduation degree in social work from Indira Gandhi National Open University.
