NEW DELHI: The national capital will soon boast a new Gujarat Bhavan to accommodate more guests from the state. And the structure will be built at a cost of Rs 132 crore, which will resemble a palace or a fort while having all the features of a modern building.

A senior official associated with the project said there is a ‘special request’ from the state government to construct the building in such a way so that it would give a feel of the state’s heritage. “White sandstone brought from Gujarat will be used for exteriors,” added the official. The building will be a perfect blend of traditional architecture with modern amenities.

The National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), a PSU under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, will build the structure at 25 B Akbar Road in Lutyens’ zone, not very far from Congress headquarters at 24 Akbar Road.

The new building that the Gujarat government will construct in Delhi will probably be named Gujarat Sadan. It is planned in an area spread over 7,066 sq m with a built-up area of 19,700 sq m. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani will lay the foundation stone at the end of this month. The construction will be completed in 18 months, officials said. The building will be environment-friendly and will have all features of a ‘green building’, according to the officials.

This will be Gujarat’s second state guest house in the national capital. Delhi already has a Gujarat Bhavan on Kautilya Marg, which is spread on around 1,418 sq m. Officials said seeing the increased activity of the state guests in the national capital in the last few years, need for a new guest house was felt.

“Green building means it will reduce pollution and degradation of environment by efficiently using energy, water and other resources,” added the official.
