NEW DELHI: To commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s significant work in Africa, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) handed over a wooden ‘Gandhi charkha’ to the representative of India’s High Commission in Kampala, Uganda, at a function held here on Saturday.

The handing over of the charkha by KVIC chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena and CEO B H Anil Kumar coincided with the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations being held by Indian community in Uganda.

The charkha—3.6-foot long, one-foot-11-inch tall and 1.5-foot wide, weighing around 25 kg, with an acrylic box packing—is made of high-quality teak. After the handing over, Saxena said it was a proud moment for KVIC and India as it would not only cement a long-lasting relationship with a continent that shaped Gandhiji’s career, but also immortalise and spread his legacy in Africa and beyond.

Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Giriraj Singh also hailed the KVIC’s decision to provide this charkha for Gandhi Jayanti celebrations in Uganda.
