NEW DELHI: Playing loud music in parties is a style statement in India. Any party—whether it’s a wedding or birthday—is boring without, not music but loud music. And it is played irrespective of the disturbance to people owing to the noise pollution it causes.

To put the brakes on such music lovers, the South Municipal Corporation of Delhi has decided to take an advance payment from people planning to use DJs at their parties in the open. According to the new proposal, anyone booking a park, and planning to use loudspeakers and DJ sets will have to deposit an amount of Rs 10,000 apart from other charges.

The deposit will be refunded only after receiving a police report that no violations were made in organising the function. If there is any violation, Rs 5,000 will be deducted from the amount. The decision came after the Public Grievance Commission took up the matter with all the land-owning agencies like the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the municipal bodies to introduce such a system of payment while granting the permission to the organisers.

“The rule will be implemented from September. Although there are rules in place, this is being done for further awareness and to maintain the fear of law. The corporation was getting complaints from people regarding music being played above the permissible limit. We hope the move will help,” said South MCD Mayor Kamaljeet Sherawat.
