Fulfilling the strong demand of  Keralites in general, the way has finally been cleared for the participation of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation  (DMRC) in the Kochi Metro Railway project.

This has been achieved following the talks held by  Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Transport Minister Aryadan Mohammed with Union Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in New Delhi on Friday.

Chandy met Dikshit on Friday afternoon and Nath later in the evening.

Though DMRC is in, its actual role in implementing the project has not been finalised yet. Kamal Nath told the media that the DMRC will participate in the Kochi Metro project and will fully support it.

‘‘However, it would be ensured that the ongoing DMRC projects in Delhi are not affected,” he said.

A decision is yet to be taken whether DMRC will take up implementation of the project fully or whether its role will be limited.

A high-level committee consisting of the chief secretaries of Kerala and Delhi and headed by Union Urban Development Secretary Sudheer Krishna will soon be formed to look into this aspect.

Oommen Chandy said  the committee will decide the ‘terms of engagement’ of DMRC in Kochi Metro and take a final decision.

‘‘We have also assured them that being part of Kochi Metro will not affect the ongoing projects of DMRC,” he said.

According to sources, during his meeting with Sheila Dikshit,  Chandy assured her that the Kochi Metro will not be a hurdle to DMRC’s other projects. He said DMRC’s earlier decision not to take up outside projects will not hit  Kochi Metro, as it’s not a new project.

“The DMRC has been associating with Kochi Metro since 2004. It was as part of this association that we asked DMRC to take up the project,” Chandy said.

There is still confusion whether DMRC principal adviser E Sreedharan would be part of  Kochi Metro as it is left to the committee  to decide on the execution of the project.

Sreedharan has made it clear that he will not be part of Kochi Metro if DMRC is not executing the project.

It has been pointed out that DMRC’s role could be limited to supervision and providing expertise for the project.

The DMRC board of directors meeting is slated to be held on Tuesday. The nature and the extent of involvement of DMRC in the Kochi metro project would be discussed at the meeting.
