Nearly three months after the nun made the rape allegation, Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal was interrogated at the Tripunithura Crime Branch SP Office for more than seven hours on Wednesday.
Though the bishop had left for Kerala from Jalandhar on Monday, the police did not divulge his whereabouts even as they waited at the CB office.
Earlier Stephen Mathew and Aloshy Joseph were hospitalised due to deteriorating health.
The commission had summoned George following his adverse remarks against the nun allegedly sexually abused by Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal.
A complete bandh was also observed with shops, other establishments and institutes being shut and the town wore a deserted look.
As 54-year old bishop Franco appeared before police investigating the case in Thrippunithura near here Wednesday, the protesters expressed hope their demand for justice will be met and he would be arrested.
The nun has accused the senior Catholic priest of sexually assaulting her repeatedly between 2014 and 2016.
The Bishop, who came to Kerala after the investigation team served a notice directing him to appear for interrogation on Wednesday, arrived by 11 am at the office of Crime Branch SP.
Though an urgent pre-arrest bail plea was filed, the petitioner’s counsel did not press for an interim order directing the police not to arrest the petitioner.
The apex court made the observations while dealing with a plea challenging a Patna High Court order restraining the media from reporting on the probe into the Muzaffarpur shelter home case.
The nun, in her complaint, alleged that on May 5, 2014, and May 6, 2016, she was raped by the bishop several times in a room attached to St Francis Mission Home in Kuruvilangad.
Joining the indefinite hunger strike of the sister of the victim, Hari Priya, a member of the AICC, said she will also continue the strike in order to support their protest.
Nature and gravity of the accusation are very important factors to decide whether the accused is entitled to get the discretionary relief of pre-arrest bail.
The victim's family had already alleged that the did not take prompt action on their complaint initially and delayed action by citing jurisdictional issues between Rewari and Mahendragarh.
The incident comes just days after a 19-year-old woman from the district was allegedly abducted and gang-raped while she was headed to a coaching class.
