The plan of Cuttack Municipal Corporation for rehabilitation of street vendors has failed to take off due to lackadaisical attitude of the civic body authorities.
Though the Marine Drive in Kochi is a prohibited area for street vendors, several sections of the walkway are illegally occupied by the vendors hindering the free movement of people on the walkway.
Vendors who have encroached footpaths in the past four months will be evicted, says city mayor V K Prasanth.
A majority of street vendors are exposing themselves to serious hazard conditions while most of them do not have a health or life insurance coverage.
While the draft rules for the same were introduced in Karnataka in 2014, it wasn’t until 2016 that the rules were finalised.
It has become a routine on NSC Bose road that twice or thrice everyday, corporation authorities chase off fruit vendors, leaving them to pack up their crates and make a run for it.
Under the scheme, nine banks and cooperative societies will give loans ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000 without any interest.
