Bomber at Shiite Mosque Kills 3 in Pakistan

A Pakistani police officer says a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a Shiite mosque in the northern Pakistani city of Rawalpindi, killing three people.

Mohammed Qamar says the bomber was on a motorcycle near a police checkpoint outside the mosque when he blew himself up Tuesday evening.

He said one police officer and two civilians were killed. Ten more police officers were wounded.

The over whelming majority of Pakistan's Muslim population are Sunni, but a sizeable minority of Shiites live in Pakistan.

The country has seen a surge in sectarian violence in recent years targeting members of the minority Islamic sect. Many Sunni militants do not view the Shiites as true Muslims.
