Yemeni Army Kills 20 Al Qaeda Militants

ADEN: Up to 20 members of the Yemen- based Al Qaeda wing were killed during armed confrontations with army units in Yemen's Hadramout province Wednesday, a security official said.

"Scores of Al Qaeda gunmen clashed with army units of the 135th Armored Brigade near Seiyun town of Hadramout province, leaving at least 20 terrorists killed on the spot," Xinhua quoted a security official as saying while requesting anonymity.

"Most of the Al Qaeda attackers were killed when troops clashed with them during the mobilisation of reinforcements to Seiyun town. Some other wanted terrorists were captured," the source said.

Three military vehicles and some heavy weapons belonging to the 135th Brigade were destroyed during the fight, the source added.

The state-run Saba News Agency confirmed that "government forces have managed to foil three armed attacks on army convoys near the Seiyun town". Among the killed or injured Al Qaeda assailants were two mid-level commanders form Saudi Arabia, the statement said.
