Pope Francis Urges For 'Immediate Climate Change' in White House Address

WASHINGTON: Pope Francis, who is on a historic maiden visit to the U.S, urged the nation on Tuesday to step up and take action on climate change saying that it was a critical moment of history and something that could no longer be left for the future.

“Mr President, I find it encouraging that you are proposing an initiative for reducing air pollution,” The Guardian quoted the Pontiff as saying.

Speaking to a crowd of more than 11,000 people on the White House South Lawn today, the Pope invoked Martin Luther King Jr in speaking of the moral need to protect ‘our common home’.

“I would like all men and women of goodwill in this great nation to support the efforts of the international community to protect the vulnerable in our world and to stimulate integral and inclusive models of development, so that our brothers and sisters everywhere may know the blessings of peace and prosperity which God wills for all his children,” the Pope said.

President Barack Obama expressed his agreement with the Pontiff’s statement and said that the Pope had reminded the people that they have a sacred obligation to protect the planet.

“We support your call to all world leaders to support the communities most vulnerable to a changing climate and to come together to preserve our precious world for future generations,” Obama said.
