Massive 7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes off Antartica coast

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck close to the South Sandwich Islands north of Antarctica in the southern Pacific Ocean, the US Geological Survey said.

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has said in an advisory that there is no tsunami threat.

The quake, initially reported as a magnitude 7.5,  hit a fairly remote area 48km north of Bristol Island, South Sandwich Islands.
