UNITED NATIONS: US Ambassador Nikki Haley says the Trump administration's policy in Afghanistan is working, saying talks between the government and the Taliban are closer than ever before.

President Donald Trump's Afghan plan involves shifting from a "time-based" approach to fighting America's longest war to emphasise linking US assistance to concrete results and cooperation from the Afghan government.

Haley told reporters today that a weekend trip by the Security Council to Afghanistan was "great" because "we could see dramatic changes in terms of what the US policy has been doing." She said the US will work toward a peace process "with the goal being that we do not want Afghanistan to be a safe haven for terrorism anymore." Kazakhstan's UN Ambassador Kairat Umarov said council members expressed concern at intensified "terrorist activities."
