At least four students were killed and one was injured Saturday in an explosion in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City, officials said.

Three consecutive explosions were heard from a house on Ly Thuong Kiet street in district 10 of the city, and soon after a huge fire was seen in the second floor of the house, Xinhua cited an online media outlet as saying.

Residents tried to extinguish the fire, until firefighters came and controlled the blaze in about 30 minutes.

Lt. Col. Huynh Quang Tam, chief of the District 1 fire prevention and fight station, said the victims were students of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology located near the explosion site.

According to initial reports, those five students were making firecrackers for use in the coming holidays, when they exploded.
