Top Journalist Murdered in Sri Lanka

Mel Gunasekara, a senior business journalist, was found murdered at her residence at Battaramulla on the outskirts of Colombo on Sunday. Gunasekara’s brother and mother were in church attending the morning service when the murder occurred. The blood drenched body was discovered by them on returning from the service. Police said that it seemed to be a case of botched up attempt at robbery.

Gunsekara was the assistant vice-president at Fitch Ratings Lanka at the time of her death but had previously worked at The Sunday Times, AFP and Lanka Business Online, earning a name as a journalist of high order.

In February  2013, business investigative journalist Faraz Shaukatally of The Sunday Leader was shot at in his house in Mount Lavinia on the outskirts of Colombo. However, he survived the attempt on his life. In November last year, another senior columnist and investigative journalist Mandana Ismail Abeywickrema was threatened by armed intruders, who were in search of some documents in her possession. The police shot dead the intruders.

On Saturday, the US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia, Nisha Biswal, had said that space in Lanka for an independent media was “decreasing”.
