BANGALORE: The Skoda Prize is the first of its kind award that recognises artists under the age of 45. Why 45?

We want to encourage experimental art, which is normally the domain of relatively young artists. By 45, most artists have found their voice. The age restriction ensures that the very young will also have an opportunity to be nominated.

What is the primary objective of the Skoda Prize?

To bring to public notice the work of an exciting cohort of young and mid-career artists. Most Indians still think of art in terms of the masters. These older artists have produced wonderful work, of course, but the younger generation deserves a place in the sun.

Do you think young artists in India are struggling to establish themselves?

There’s a good system in place of scouting for talent. Usually somebody with evident talent will be noticed and offered a showing by one of the galleries focusing on youngsters.

Who can participate in the event? And what is the criteria?

Any Indian citizen under the age of 45 who has had a solo show between May 2009 and May 2010 is eligible to               participate. All the terms and conditions can be read on our website www.theskodaprize.com, and nomination forms are available for download as well.

How do you define           contemporary art?

Definitions vary, but for me the emergence of Pop Art is a crucial marker in the shift from ‘modern’ to ‘contemporary’ art.

Sometimes, it’s difficult to judge works of art, because of it’s subjective nature. How are you planning to judge the works?

One cannot and does not want to remove subjectivity from the process. However, a broad consensus exists among those familiar with art about the historical importance of certain artists. This indicates judgements are not purely subjective. Our jurors are all exceptionally qualified, and known for their integrity and impartiality. Patrons like The British Council and Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council, will help us add international experts in the final judging. Grant Thornton will validate the transparency and fairness of the process.
