YELAHANKA:Residents of Yelahanka will get to witness a rural folk art show near Allalasandra Lake from 6 pm today.
The programme, titled Janapada Suggi, is organised by the Department of Information and Public Relations, in association with Yelahanka United Environment Association (YUVA).
The annual event, which is usually held at Chitrakala Parishat, has been moved to a new location to reach more people.
Vishu Kumar, Director of the Department of Information and Public Relations, says, “Though Chitrakala Parishat has a great atmosphere, we hardly saw any people coming to watch the show. So we decided to go move to an area where people would be more open to enjoying folk art.”
Jagadeesh Giri, joint secretary of YUVA, along with his team, took the initiative to bring Janapada Suggi to Yelanhanka.
He says, “Such programmes are usually held in the heart of the city. We felt that folk art should reach other communities as well and that prompted us to approach the Information Department.”
The association has previously organised programmes in association with the Kannada and Culture Department and a puppet show with Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts. “They were successful events and we presented a similar plan to the officials. They liked the idea. But their only question was whether we can pull the crowd to such an event. And we have told them that they can expect around 2,500 people,” Giri says.
The event will feature a talk by renowned folklorist Kuruva Basavaraj on dance, followed by traditional Sobane songs by Jayamma and team, Nandidhwaja by Siddegowda and team, tamate drumming by Mahadevaiah and team and dolu kunita by Anil Kumar and troupe, among other performances.
“This is the first time that we are organising Janapada Suggi for a specific neighbourhood. If the event is successful, we plan to take it to the rest of Bengaluru,” Vishu Kumar added.
