QUEEN’S ROAD: The Indian Cancer Society (ICS) is organising a concert titled Beat Cancer at Chowdiah Memorial Hall on Friday, ahead of National Cancer Survivors Day, which is observed on every first Sunday of June.
Musical maestros like Sivamani (drums), Rahul Sharma (santoor), Mandolin Rajesh (mandolin), Giridhar Udupa (ghatam) and Stephen Devassy (keyboard), along with Bharadwaj Sathavalli and Satyajit Talwalker, will perform at the event.
This is the first time all these artistes will be sharing a stage, Giridhar Udupa told City Express. "It will be a performance by old friends and acquaintances. Guests can look forward to a medley of Classical compositions and world music."
On performing in Bengaluru, the artiste says, "This city encourages all kinds of music and is the best stage in the world."
Udupa had readily agreed to play for cause, as he has lost two close friends to cancer.
Vijay Sharma, Honourary Secretary of ICS, Bengaluru, says, "Through this concert, we hope to celebrate cancer survivors, inspire other victims and create awareness about early detection and the possibility of curing cancer."
The organisation plans to make it an annual event. With specific focus on the low-income group, the proceeds from the show will be used to organise emotional support programmes.
"Apart from the contributions of eight organisations, corporate companies and various individuals, the support of Venkat Panchapakesan (former Vice-President, Engineering at Google Inc. who recently succumbed to cancer) and his family has been the most encouraging," he further says.
