THIRUVARUR Swaminathan succeeded in blending tradition and modernity with a clear musical perception with his inspired flute recital at Brahma Gana Sabha on Monday.
At the Pethachi auditorium, the first and senior-most disciple of veteran N Ramani excelled in coming up with full measures of imagination as he traversed through Vinayaga (raga Hamsadwani) of Veena Kuppier, after a crisp opening in a varnam in Nattai Kurunji. The copious imagery of the intuitive expansionism in building up on the raga was clear in the second score.
If Sri Narada in raga Kannada of Thyagaraja was played with vividness, the structure of Simmendra Madyamam (Ninnae Nanni) of Vasudevachariar was brought out with consummate ease. The audience appreciated the meditative comprehension of the kriti structure.
When the Mohanam alapana followed by Jagadeeswari of Thiruvarur Ramasamy Pillai was presented with impulsive outpouring, one admired his ability to comprehend raga swaroopa diligently.
On the whole, the artiste demonstrated with considerable elan the subtleties of the various raga structures and the kritis and one could only admire his breathtaking tonal equations with his bamboo instrument.
V L Kumar (violin) was, as usual, resonant rich and the high artistic level of this concert seemed to have influenced Serthalai Ananthakrishnan (mridangam) and Pudukkottai Ramachandran (ghatam), who played with sensitised rhythmic resonance, giving silky percussive support.
