KOCHI: George Cheriyan, managing director of consultancy services provider Doha Design Centre, Doha, Qatar, passed away in Brisbane, Australia, on Friday. He was 65.    He was active in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi films. He has nearly 30 feature films and a few television serials to his credit, as an actor.   Cheriyanji, as he was popularly known, had played some important roles in a number of films, including ‘Butterflies’, ‘Njan Gandharvan’, ‘Kashmeeram’, ‘Thakshasila’ and ‘Uppukandam Brothers’.

He debuted with the film ‘Thanal’ while he was a student at the Thiruvananthapuram Engineering College. ‘Asuravith’ was his last film. He has also published an anthology of poems, titled “Cheru Jeevitha Kavithakal”.  George Cheriyan was a member of the Thekkeppurath family of Edanadu, near Chengannur.

 His mortal remains will be brought to his house at Vyttila  on Sunday morning. The funeral will be held at the cemetery of the Edanadu Salem Marthoma Church at 4 pm on Monday.   He is survived by wife Dr Annamma Cheriyan and sons Rohan (architect) and Rony (engineer).
