Over 78 Percent Turnout in Wayanad

The hill district of Wayanad recorded 78.07 per cent of voter turnout in the Assembly elections held on Monday.

Kozhikode: The hill district of Wayanad recorded 78.07 per cent of voter turnout in the Assembly elections held on Monday. The polls were held under tight security in view of the Maoist threat and calls for poll boycott, where stakes are high for both UDF and LDF.

In 2011, the district registered 73.8 per cent polling. According to officials, the poll process was by and large peaceful in the district. Of the total three seats - Kalpetta recorded the highest voter turnout of 78.65 per cent, followed by Sulthan Bathery (78.32 per cent) and Mananthavady (77.25 per cent).

All the three constituencies in the district witnessed brisk polling in the morning with voter turnout crossed 50 per cent mark by 1pm.

Other than state police personnel, three companies of CRPF, two companies of Karnataka police, two companies of DGP striking force, one company district police chief striking force were deployed in the district to check any untoward incidents. The proceedings at 25 polling booths identified as Maoist threat booths were monitored through web casting.
