Bringing Back the Yesteryear Charm

After conjuring the tattoo of Vishnuvardhan in Mr and Mrs Ramachari, Santhosh is now bringing Kasturi Nivasa’s signature pigeon back to the screen in Rajakumara

Director Santhosh Ananddram remains rooted in his belief that there is nothing like the films of the past and the memories of classic Kannada  cinema. These films inspire him to bring the nostalgia back into a colourful new context especially customised for the present. He seems to strongly believe that memories are what hold the past and present together and give continuity and dignity to human life. So, when he made Mr and Mrs Ramachari, he went back to Nagarahavu starring Vishnuvardhan and culled out its earlier magnificence and gave it a new life in his film in the form of various elements, especially the superstar’s tattoo on actor Yash. It brought back vivid memories of the yesteryear elegance among many a fan. And now, he is doing it again with his upcoming film, Rajakumara starring Puneeth Rajkumar.

“The white pigeon became a cult symbol after Dr Rajkumar’s Kasturi Nivasa and I am using it as a small tribute to the legendary actor. There will be reflections of Dr Rajkumar through the film and Puneeth completes the entire package with a very real family connection to the legacy,” says Santhosh.

Though the director is just one film old, he feels it is always better to take inspiration from our local heroes, epics and culture instead of getting influenced by international films. “I am not stealing a film nor am I mixing up two to three Hollywood films and coming up with one film. I feel pride in keeping, learning and spreading the ethics of Kannada films. Even in the future, I would like to use old

Kannada titles for my films or if possible, a remix of old Kannada songs. I also intend to make films going back to the old roots,” asserts Santhosh adding, “Sandalwood has seen some great classics in the past and I intend to take the best elements from them and continue their legacy. I don’t mind people thinking that I work on one track because I am passionate about my work and all the things related to the Kannada industry.”

The director also feels that it is time the industry stops having insecurities about itself and and starts appreciating its overall success. “Only a healthy competition can create good films and motivate young directors,” feels Santhosh.

Citing example of personalities in the industry, Santhosh says, “Shivrajkumar is beyond hits and flops. He is like Ajith in Tamil and Pawan Kalyan in the Telugu industry, who don’t have any insecurities and just concentrate on their craft. Likewise actor and director Ravichandran and director and producer Rajendra Singh Babu provide constructive opinions which are the need of the hour.”

According to him, there is need for brainstorming sessions and discussions. “I am a regular with Pavan Wadeyar, Prashanth Neel, writer Chintan and it is through our discussions that we get creative ideas. It is time we all come together and I am glad that there are youngsters who are taking one step ahead,” he says.
