Shivram says no to DRS

N Jagannath Das

The controversial Decision Review System (DRS) continues to make news. If India were firm in their refusal to DRS, their decision stands to be vindicated given the few decisions which went wrong in the first Ashes Test between England and Australia at Trent Bridge.

Former international umpire Ivaturi Shivram thinks that DRS cannot be the right answer to this ever growing controversy. “Personally, I’m not with the DRS and technology, excepting for the line decisions. I have my own reservations. I still feel the technology is not fool proof with any decisions in and around the bat. The umpires are the best judges,’’ said Shivram.

Shivram said even in this Ashes series, some players are not happy with the way some decisions are going.

“Even for the matter, the snickometer is not full proof. For instance the snickometer catches the sound, if bat hitting the pad or bat hitting the boot. At similar timing, the ball may be closer to the bat. So how will the third umpire, based on the snickometer, know whether it is touching the bat, pad or boot,” he added.
