HYDERBAD: The Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) of Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi was Friday allotted a new party symbol -- rising sun.

The party had applied for new symbol as it was not happy with the "rail engine" symbol on which it fought the recent elections to the Andhra Pradesh assembly and the Lok Sabha.

The party, which bagged only 18 seats in 294-member assembly and drew a blank in Lok Sabha elections, identified the confusion among voters over the symbol as one of the reasons for its poor show.

The party felt that there was confusion among voters due to resemblance between rail engine and road roller allotted to other candidates. A section of party leaders also felt that rail engine symbol was not auspicious.

PRP welcomed the decision of the Election Commission that came ahead of the elections to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

The PRP has been recognised as the state party by the poll panel as it polled more than 15 percent of popular votes. Thus, it is entitled to have a permanent symbol.

Chiranjeevi had quit films to float PRP in August last year.
