150 Names Submitted, Only 60 to Get Rajyotsava Award

BENGALURU: Kannada Rajyotsava Award selection committee submitted their recommendation list earlier this week to Chief Minister Siddaramiah.

Sources from the Department of Kannada and Culture said that they had received over 1,500 applications.

“They took some names from the application and some they choose on their own. They have now submitted a list that contains more than 150 names. It is up to CM and others concerned to decide the final names,” sources said. Also this time 30 per cent of the awardees will be women.

The government, which started giving the awards in 1966, has feted 278 individuals and organisations till date. Since this is the 60th year of the awards, the government has decided to honour 60 people. Last year, 59 individuals and organisations were given the awards. “Award will be given to 60 individuals and organisations. We are not looking for any particular age bracket. However, seniors will be given priority. While choosing the awardees, we ensured  that all districts gets equal importance. Even NRIs and Kannadigas residing outside the state were considered,” sources added.
