ALUVA: The government is committed to completing the construction of the proposed Seaport-Airport Road which would play a crucial role in solving the traffic congestion in Kochi and nearby areas, AM Yusuf MLA has said.

He told reporters that, in a reply to his submission in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, Public Works Minister M Vijayakumar said the proposed Seaport-Airport Road would be constructed in three phases.

The first phase of the double-lane road with a distance of 13 km from Karingachira (Tripunithura) to Kalamassery had been completed and opened for traffic in 2003.

The feasibility study of the second phase from Kalamassery to Kariyad was completed by the FACT Engineering and Design Organisation (FEDO) and the alignment of 14.9 km of road was finalised. The third phase is proposed to be a 6 kmlong road from Karingachira connecting the NH 49.

With the completion of the various projects in and around Kochi, including the International Container Transshipment Terminal in Vallarpadam, the traffic congestion will go up very much. The SeaportAirport Road will be helpful for better road connectivity, Yusuf said.
