Noted academician Prof P S Manisundaram, who was the first principal of the Regional Engineering College here, now National Institute of Technology, died today after a brief illness, family sources said.
Manisundaram, 87, was the Principal of the REC when it was set up in 1964 and held the post for 18 years. He then became the first Vice-Chancellor of the city-based Bharathidasan University.
He was one of the pioneers in fine tuning the technical education system in the country and known for his extraordinary memory.
Manisundaram did his Phd from an university in Canada.
