Charge sheet against 6 for murder of PMK man in Marakkanam violence

The CB-CID filed the charge sheet against six persons for the murder of a PMK functionary P Selvaraj during the violence in Marakkanam. In the clash that broke out between PMK cadre and residents of a village in Marakkanam on the East Coast Road on April 25, Selvaraj was hacked to death by a group of villagers. The clash broke out as a large number of PMK members were passing through the village on the East Coast Road to attend a function organised by the party at Mahabalipuram.

While local police initially registered a case of accidental death, the case was later altered as a case of murder and  transferred to CB-CID for further investigation.

Six persons of the village belonging to the Dalit community were arrested. Charges against them included murder.

Completing the investigation in the case, the CBCID filed a charge sheet against the six accused in a judicial magistrate court at Dindugal on Thursday.

The accused persons were identified as M Manikandan (30), V Raghu (28), E Senthil Kumar (29), S Parinathan (34), M Rajji (24) and M Sekar (36). “All the accused are from Kalikuppam village near Marakkanam. They carried out the attack as a retaliation after their huts were burnt by the PMK members,” said investigating officer DSP Chandrasekaran, He said a main evidence in the case was the cellphone of the deceased person that was taken away by one of the accused from the spot. “The accused was later using it after inserting his SIM card. Besides this, we have included nearly 80 witnesses,” said the officer.

The trial in the case is likely to begin soon.
