Sanskrit Scholar Sriramachandrudu Dead

HYDERABAD: Padmasri recipient and former director of Sanskrit Academy of Osmania University Pullela Sriramachandrudu (88) passed away following a brief illness on Wednesday at his residence here. He is survived by wife and two children.

He served the Sanskrit Academy from 1980 to 1991 and penned around 175 books. He also won the President’s award.

Known as Mahamahopadhyaya, Sriramachandrudu was born in Amalapuram in East Godavari district. He started his journey as a student of ‘Vyakarna Sastra’ and obtained masters degrees in Sanskrit, Hindi and English from BHU and a PhD in Sanskrit from Osmania University, where he had served for 27 years.

His recent work a word to word Telugu translation of Valmiki’s Ramayana was the best-seller.  The last rites of Sriramachandrudu will be performed on Thursday.
