Lagaan (2001): Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, this period drama is set during the British rule in India. The story revolves around a group of villagers challenging their British rulers to a cricket match, with the promise of tax relief if they win. Starring Aamir Khan in the lead, Lagaan is a cult classic that's worth rewatching as it evokes resilience and unity.

Swades (2004): Starring Shah Rukh Khan as Mohan Bhargav, a NASA scientist of Indian origin who returns to his village to visit his nanny, Kaveri Amma, who raised him. Swades, which is available on Netflix, turns 20 this year. Although it initially flopped when it was released, this movie is also considered as a cult classic now.

Rang De Basanti (2006): Also starring Aamir Khan, this film explores the lives of college friends who, while working on a documentary about India’s freedom fighters, are deeply moved by the stories and start to confront contemporary issues of corruption. Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, the movie features an ensemble cast of Soha Ali Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Kunal Kapoor.

Chak De! India (2007): Another SRK favourite that has won many hearts! He plays the role of Kabir Khan, the coach of the Indian women’s hockey team. The movie revolved around their journey and efforts to bring home the World Cup. The iconic title track is still played today at various sports events in our country.

Raazi (2018): Based on Harinder Sikka's book 'Calling Sehmat', this Alia Bhatt starrer is a heartbreaking tale. It depicts an Indian Research and Analysis Wing agent who is marries into a Pakistani military family to gather intelligence before the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. With Vicky Kaushal as the male lead, this spy thriller portrays a poignant story of bravery, sacrifice and more.

Shershaah (2021): The film recounts the valor of Kargil War hero Captain Vikram Batra, who was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra. Sidharth Malhotra stars in a dual role as Vikram Batra and his twin brother Vishal, with Kiara Advani playing his lover, Dimple Cheema. Shershaah is a tribute the soldier's courageous legacy.

Border (1997): Saving the best for last, Border is a classic depiction of patriotism that is essential to watch for both Independence Day and Republic Day. Set during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, the film focuses on the Battle of Longewala. The multi-starrer movie features Sunny Deol, Suniel Shetty, and Jackie Shroff among many others in vital roles.
